Who Can Fix Health Care? Six Ways to Get Involved

Value-Driven Health Care: Six Ways to Get Involved

Every day is an opportunity to take an active role in your health. With health information and education, improved communication and a focus on well-being, you can make a difference.

  1. Treat your doctor like a partner. Make a list of notes and concerns before you see your doctor. During your appointment, ask questions, discuss options and agree on a plan.
  2. Double your motivation. If your plan is to lower your health risk by eating more vegetables, share your commitment with your spouse or a friend. Put it in writing. Post it on the fridge. You're more likely stick to commitments if others are holding you accountable.
  3. Make wellness a daily to-do. Walk and bike more, drive less. Get 7 to 9 hours of sleep each night. Drink plenty of water. Exercise your brain. Keep stress under control. Wash your hands frequently and thoroughly. Sign up for a fitness program.
  4. Know your health risks. Have your blood pressure and cholesterol level checked. Get regular check-ups. Know your family health history and ask your doctor how you can lower your risks for illnesses.
  5. Safeguard your good health. Buckle up every time you get into a car. Never drink and drive. Wear a helmet when biking. Practice safer sex. If you don't smoke, don't start; if you do smoke, find a program to help you quit. Stretch your muscles before you exert yourself.
  6. Watch your wallet. We all need to spend our health care dollars more efficiently. Ask doctors and other providers about costs before you get treated. You might not always get an exact answer, but asking lets them know that costs are important to you.
