Shalisa: Fearless is turning grief into action


In 2011, Shalisa Hayes lost her 17-year-old son to gun violence: He’d been at a party to pick up a friend and was fatally shot when someone opened fire. In the midst of her grief, Shalisa remembered a conversation she’d had with her son about six months before he was killed. He’d asked her how to start a community center, because kids in their neighborhood had nowhere to go.
