Navigating nationwide pharmacy closures

August 26, 2025

Recent news has highlighted a wave of closures among major pharmacy chains like Rite Aid/Bartell Drugs, Walgreens and CVS Pharmacy. We understand these changes are affecting pharmacy access across the country, with impacts in our Washington, Oregon and Idaho service areas, and potential future changes in Utah.

These industry shifts reflect broader trends in health care delivery, as pharmacy chains adapt to changing consumer preferences, growing demand for home delivery options and evolving business models. Below is information about how we’re providing support through these changes.

What to know about the pharmacy closures

Continuous monitoring: We’re in regular communication with Prime, our pharmacy benefits manager, and are actively tracking all pharmacy closures that may impact your employees. We receive regular updates about closures and information about where prescriptions are being transferred.

Timely updates: We're regularly updating our pharmacy directory to reflect these changes, ensuring the most accurate information when searching for pharmacy options.

Transition support: Rite Aid and CVS have established closure notification protocols, including in-store signage, text messages, phone calls and letters to inform customers where their prescriptions are being transferred. We’re also calling new pharmacies to ensure they can manage the volume of transferred prescriptions.

Robust network access: Despite these closures, our pharmacy network remains strong with more than 63,000 retail pharmacies nationwide. Your employees will continue to have multiple in-network options available to them.

No change to benefits: Prescription coverage and copays remain the same at any in-network pharmacy.
