Access alternative care

Medicare and holistic health

Many older adults today are turning to holistic health practices, such as complementary and alternative care. A survey by the American Association of Retired People (AARP) and the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine revealed that over half of people 50 and older use complementary and alternative medicine (CAM).

At Regence, we take a holistic approach to health. That's why our benefits go beyond traditional Medicare coverage—and we offer select Medicare plans that cover acupuncture, additional chiropractic and naturopathy.

Why CAM for older adults?

CAM therapies are popular among older adults because in many cases they can offer a gentler approach to care. For example, a common complementary practice is using acupuncture alongside more conventional cancer treatments, as it can alleviate the side effects of the treatments.

Older adults also have a greater risk for developing chronic health conditions. This means that treatments need to be sustainable and are often focused on improving quality of life. CAM therapies and natural supplements can help with managing sleep and nutrition, for example—things that can have a great impact on well-being.

Pain management is often important for older adults. Yoga and chiropractic care can be good alternatives to prescription medications like opioids. Read more about Regence's response to the opioid crisis.

Regence: Your partner in holistic health

We make it easy for you to get CAM therapies. You can visit any participating acupuncturist, chiropractor or naturopath in our network without a referral or authorization from your primary care physician.

However, as with any type of treatment, it's a good idea to talk with your doctor about the risks and benefits of any therapy you're considering and keep them updated on any CAM therapies you're using.

Restore your mind, body and spirit

CAM practitioners emphasize holistic care—which means focusing not just on the physical body but on emotional and spiritual health.

Whether it's through yoga, meditation, massage therapy, tai chi or homeopathy, CAM therapies can offer the balance and support you need.
