ASO groups: New expert consultation and navigation service can produce better outcomes and reduce costs

May 31, 2022

An estimated 30% of health care dollars are wasted annually. Some of that waste includes money spent on misdiagnoses, suboptimal treatment plans and incorrect specialist referrals. The results: Members don’t get the health outcomes they’re looking for, and employer groups and insurance companies end up paying higher costs. In complex cases, an expert consultation with a specialist can help combat that waste and guide members toward more effective care and better outcomes.

A new treatment decision service provided by 2nd.MD gives members access to board-certified specialists who provide guidance on complex health care needs. Receiving an expert consultation can provide members confidence in a diagnosis and treatment plan.

How expert consultations work

To initiate an expert consultation, the member just submits an intake with full medical history. 2nd.MD collects all the medical records and, within an average of three days, schedules a 30-minute (or more) live consultation with a specialist via video or phone. The specialists at 2nd.MD are among a panel of 1,000 elite experts chosen from the nation’s top facilities.

Expert consultations can validate an existing diagnosis and treatment or recommend alternatives. In either case, the member feels greater confidence in proceeding with the recommendation. Concierge service from 2nd.MD provides follow-up and support, and the consultation is fully integrated with Regence Clinical Services, enabling us to further support the member.

Consultations provided across a wide range of medical conditions

All 2nd.MD specialists are board certified and handpicked to ensure expertise can be provided across all adult and pediatric subspecialties. Most frequently, these are within musculoskeletal, nervous system, oncology, digestive, women’s health and circulatory treatment categories. Consultations can result in improved treatment plans, alternate diagnoses and canceled surgeries, and data show each consultation produces an average cost savings of $6,684.

Robust on-demand reporting from 2nd.MD provides a snapshot of monthly employee utilization. It also offers important insights on the impact of consultations on health outcomes and cost-avoidance efforts.

This treatment decision service provided by 2nd.MD is available as a buy-up for self-funded groups. Share the flyer with groups that are interested.
